Artist Statement

Working as a professional artist over the past nine years has influenced me, each day, in

different ways, particularly in the way the world is forever changing. More specifically, my

relationships with others, different cultures, different beliefs and environments have encouraged

me as an artist to approach my art with open arms and mind. As I have traveled the world, I have

had the opportunity to collaborate my efforts and appreciation for all of the arts with my fellow

colleagues. Specifically, I remain in awe of certain people that have touched my life with their own

lives. Cunningham, Forsythe, Gaga, and Counter Technique, along with my tap dancing

grandmother have expanded my world from classical ballet, modern dance, and aerial dance

training. These experiences have allowed me to transform my passion and talents into a world in

which collaborative choreography can present some of the most creative pieces that I have had

the pleasure participating in as a dancer.

My greatest challenge as a dancer/choreographer has been to walk into a space with too

many pre-planned ideas in my head, only to discover that the people and environment that I am

presented with encourage me to quickly get my creative juices flowing in order to overcome any

obstacles and preconceived notions that might not fit into the immediate situation. I embrace the

idea of sharing ideas with other dancers to create movement that best suits their bodies, their

moods, their mindsets and their abilities.

My greatest influences as a dancer are clearly varied. Much of my career has involved

working on different pieces of apparatus, or with a particular structure, which is something that I

intend to always have as part of my dance life. I have found that experimenting and examining

our environment is a path to expanding endless possibilities and imagination in the world of

movement. Incorporating all that we have in our midst to work with is a goal of mine that has

evolved over time.

I often reach back to the past and allow certain movements to transform my body into a

completely original and creative way to express my passion and story that I want to share. One of

my solo creations, “Curved Under” (2014) was born in this way. It is a forever-evolving solo,

which I have committed to, with the idea of expanding one day to include a group of dancers.

Dance is an ever-growing art that should be able to touch the senses of the audience. It

is something that should create wonder, embrace feelings, encourage living, and entertain.

Whether on a bare stage, one a street corner, with props, without props, my idea of dance is

something that should be a universal language and have the ability to challenge the mind,

embrace the world and create wonder.
